Is the greatest barrier to your success the fear of failure?

Lisa Murray - Monday, September 01, 2008

Here are my top 3 coaching questions you can ask yourself to discover if your greatest barrier to success is actually the fear of failure...

When was the last time you had a business project or idea fail?
If it was less than a month ago, it's possible that the fear of failure has you paralysed! No failures probably means you aren't having that many successes either!!  Trial and error worked pretty well for Einstein (and a few other geniuses that come to mind...)  Every failure is taking you one step closer to success.

What important action 'should' you have taken by now that you are procrastinating on? Are you procrastinating because you're concerned about failing? Think of it this way - you already have a 'no' so go ahead and do it anyway! What if you were to succeed? What would your upside be?
Does your idea feel 'too big'? If you are feeling stuck, not sure where to start, or completely overwhelmed, then maybe your idea is so big that you are weighed down by the spectre of failure. Breaking your idea into manageable steps that feel achieveable is a great cure!

Lastly, if you reframe any failure as a learning experience then there is no way you can see it as a failure. There is a silver lining in every cloud - the trick is to make sure you don't repeat the same mistakes over and over! Ask yourself: What have I learned here? Whilst there's learning there's life - in your business and in yourself!!

What lies beyond your current focus?

How do you find the right balance between being productive and being curious?
  • What are you overfocusing your time and energy on because it is easy?
  • What aspect of your business has not had nearly enough attention lately?
  • What opportunity have you (almost) missed by not being curious enough?
  • What new marketing or product idea could you explore today?
  • Where could you ‘let go of the steering wheel’ and trust that the right results will arrive?

Is 'lack of time' quietly killing you?

What would it take for you to find more free time?
  • Television - can you save 5 days a month?  (The average American can!!)
  • “I must… I should…. I have to…”  - can you outsource the source of your misery?
  • Zzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzz – can you sleep 15 minutes less each day and spend it visioning your success?
  • Driving – how can you make this time productive?  Business and mindset audio books are excellent!
  • How much time and space do you allow yourself to work on your business rather than in it?

Words of wisdom:  "Time is the coin of your life.  It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent.  Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you."  ~Carl Sandberg
