How to Accomplish More By Doing Less

Lisa Murray - Tuesday, December 09, 2008
This is a long but highly insightful video by the Zen Monk, Marc Lesser - definitely worth a watch if you are overworked or overwhelmed!!

A few interesting questions from Marc:

  • What are you doing in your life that is extraneous?  (Or, what should be at the top of your 'NOT to do' list?!!)
  • What do you measure in your life by its level of pain?  (e.g. your cashflow??)
  • Where are you allowing things to be 'satisfactory' rather than letting creativity and chaos show you the (easier) way?
  • What routines and structures have you got that help you achieve more but do less?
  • Where in your life can you experiment and try a different solution?

What is your most pressing small business challenge?

Lisa Murray - Tuesday, December 09, 2008

Recently I saw an online survey of small business owners which indicated that around 60% saw their most challenging issue as finding new clients and getting sales.  Another 25% were most concerned about finding the time to do everything.

Coincidentally one of my clients has just formed an innovative online/offline networking initiative which is primarily focused on helping business people with lead generation and marketing.  You can join the online group for free (make sure you put up your business profile!!) and there will be fun networking events held locally (Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast) from early 2009.

I was surprised that the research did not show more emphasis on getting the business model or strategy right, as often developing the right strategy is what generates sales with ease!!

I'm interested in what you think about this - if you are a Brisbane small business owner, go check out my Brisbane Business Networking profile and place your vote!

If you'd like to sign-up to join the networking group, you can do so for free here!

What do you do when your offer sucks?

Lisa Murray - Monday, November 17, 2008
Over the past couple of weeks I’ve had at least 4 energy companies do the door-to-door ‘I’m not selling anything’ spiel and then immediately trying to get me to convert my account to their company, all the while pretending they are just trying to save me money - one of them went so far as to suggest I would not be changing companies, when clearly I would have been!  Each one has had some type of creative excuse as to why I should consider this, and not one of them has got me anywhere near filling in the form!  And herein lies the lesson for all aspiring marketers…

  1. Your offer must be believable.  Every single one of them has offered a discount on my current electricity prices, but not one of them could prove that it would actually cost me less.  For a service based on usage, a discount offer is not believable - there is nothing to base it on.  Not one of them even tried to prove that they charge an equal or lesser price than their competitors (Too hard perhaps??  Or maybe simply not true?)
  2. Your offer must be meaningful and desirable to the prospect.  I work from home – I figure that it will take at least 30 minutes to change this over.  Once my hourly rate is factored into the equation, by my maths, it would be costing me money to change electricity suppliers!  No one has yet offered to reimburse me for my time!!
  3. Your sales pitch must be honest.  If you are in business and you’re not trying to sell me something, then why are you interrupting me?  If I can’t believe what you’ve just said, I’m certainly not going to believe that you’ll save me money…
Have a think about your own sales pitches and marketing efforts – from your prospective customers’ perspective.  You may be surprised by what you see!

I'm off to get a 'No canvassers, No Hawkers' sign!!

Have you confused fear with intuition?

Lisa Murray - Thursday, October 16, 2008

Don’t confuse fear with intuition. Fear is an instinct that comes from the gut, but intuition comes from the mind and heart. If you listen to your mind and heart, your gut-wrenching fears won’t fool you!

Are you waiting for the 'light at the end of the tunnel'?

Lisa Murray - Wednesday, October 08, 2008

I recently found myself thinking about when I would 'see the light at the end of the tunnel’.

Why do we wait for the light at the end of the tunnel? It seems like a pretty dumb idea in a way. If we are infinitely amazing (human) beings, then why on earth are we waiting??? Then I started considering how to circumvent the tunnel altogether…

+ What would it take to get rid of ‘tunnel vision’?
+ Could you spend a few minutes seeing your challenge from the perspective of others?
+ How could you remove the blinkers and keep yourself out of the tunnel in the first place? (being willing to have awareness is one option!!)
+ Would commitment to a really amazing vision keep you possibility focused instead?
+ Could creative thinking offer new solutions to tunnel syndrome?

Lisa Murray - Thursday, October 02, 2008

+ Could you spend 30 minutes today finding new products or services your customers will love?
+ Could you spend 30 minutes every day coaching your team to better performance?
+ Could you spend 30 minutes today talking about what’s great right now?
+ Could you spend 30 minutes creating a new marketing campaign?
